I was surprised to read on Wired today that’s it been eight years since the last update to the USB standard that is ubiquitous amongst today’s electronic devices. Now it seems is a good time for an update, and that’s where USB 3.0 comes in.
USB 3.0 will allow data exchange of 4.8 Gigabits per second which is ten times faster that USB 2.0! That means you can transfer a bluray movie in approximately one minute!

MySpace Puts The Hammer Down On Project Playlist

MySpace is getting back into the business of blocking third party widgets, it seems - today they’ve banned embedded music widgets from the fast growing Project Playlist. But unlike previous 2006 and 2007 blocks of iMeem, Photobucket and many others, this time MySpace is doing it under threat of litigation from the major labels.We first got word from MySpace users that their Playlist widgets are simply vanishing from their MySpace profiles earlier today. When we contacted MySpace they confirmed the ban, noting that they have received infringement notices from “major music companies”:

MySpace is an open platform that welcomes all developers to build rich and legitimate applications for its global community. We take copyright issues very seriously and our goal is to help developers build a substantial business by creating an environment that respects rights holders and protects their content.

MySpace has received notices of infringement about Project Playlist at different times from several of the major music companies currently suing Project Playlist. Per our policy of taking very seriously the requests of rights holders to block access to third party sites that are believed to be infringing, we have evaluated the requests of the major music companies and determined that it is in our best interest not to allow Project Playlist widgets on MySpace, and effective immediately, we will no longer be allowing these widgets within the MySpace platform. Any third party widgets (including any music widgets) are welcome on MySpace so long as they do not include infringing content—we encourage our users to utilize the many legitimate applications found on MySpace and across the Web.

Those major music companies are likely Warner Music, Universal Music Group and EMI, which have been in litigation with Project Playlist since April 2008. This is both a ban and a scrub, meaning users can’t add new widgets and all old widgets are being removed from the site.

Apparently this isn’t the first time the two companies have come to blows. MySpace also blocked Project Playlist earlier this year in March, but the company was able to evade the block with some success.

An industry source also confirms that Facebook has been served with the same notice of infringement. As of now, Playlist is still live on that site.

Project Playlist recently hired former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta as CEO and raised an undisclosed round of financing.

Facebook Stares Down Labels Over Project Playlist Takedown Demand

Earlier this afternoon MySpace scrubbed all traces of Project Playlist music widgets from the site, and users are unable to embed any further playlists. The scrub was the result of infringement notices from the major labels, all of which are in litigation with Project Playlist.

The labels, sources say, sent the same takedown notices to Facebook, which has 660,000 users with playlists from Project Playlist. But Facebook has refused to comply with those demands, our sources say.

Facebook for their part are refusing to comment, as is Project Playlist. But our music industry sources are calling Facebook’s refusal to comply “irresponsible” and saying that a lawsuit is inevitable if Facebook doesn’t remove the application and widgets.

It’s not clear Facebook is fully aware of what they’re stepping into (although the experience of Mark Zuckerberg’s friend Sean Parker, who is the founding President of Facebook and the cofounder of Napster, with labels should give them some indication). The labels aren’t screwing around, and their fury with Project Playlist, who they say have been stalling on a music licensing deal for months, is unchecked.

Expect users to give Facebook a big thumbs up for staring down the labels. My question is, how far is Facebook willing to go to protect Project Playlist? The potential litigation exposure is massive.

Scientists Hack Cellphone to Analyze Blood, Detect Disease, Help Developing Nations

LOS ANGELES — A new MacGyver-esque cellphone hack could bring cheap, on-the-spot disease detection to even the most remote villages on the planet. Using only an LED, plastic light filter and some wires, scientists at UCLA have modded a cellphone into a portable blood tester capable of detecting HIV, malaria and other illnesses.Blood tests today require either refrigerator-sized machines that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars or a trained technician who manually identifies and counts cells under a microscope. These systems are slow, expensive and require dedicated labs to function. And soon they could be a thing of the past.

UCLA researcher Dr. Aydogan Ozcan images thousands of blood cells instantly by placing them on an off-the-shelf camera sensor and lighting them with a filtered-light source (coherent light, for you science buffs). The filtered light exposes distinctive qualities of the cells, which are then interpreted by Ozcan's custom software. By analyzing the cell types present in a much larger sample, a more accurate diagnosis can be made in a matter of minutes. No more sending blood away to a lab and waiting days or weeks for the results.

Review:
1by1 is a small, portable and simple music player that focuses on playing music from folders. It can't browse using tags so you will have to do with filenames only. 1by1 supports playlists, favorites , gapless playback and a has an audio enhancer that works with 16 bit output. By default 1by1 only support MP2 and MP3 files however you can install Winamp plugins in order to make 1by1 play OGG, WAV, Etc. files. Even tough 1by1 doesn't have tag browsing it has something called "big display" which is a panel that can show several things like for example: A VU meter, a song IDV3 tag, the current time and album art. It actually looks pretty nice as you can see in the screenshot i took and you can change its' color and font.
Anyway 1by1 is a simple player for playing tracks from folders, just keep in mind that if you want to use it from a pendrive you must extract the installer contents using 7-zip or other file archiver. Available for all versions of Windows.

Review:

Opera@USB attemps to make the Opera browser fully portable with pretty good results in my opinion. All of Opera features along with it's trademark speed are packed into a zip file which can be placed into a pendrive and launched normally. Opera@USB supports a wide variety of languages so if your an international person the chances that your language is supported are very high. The only drawback with this program is that it only works with Windows, that sucks when you think the original Opera browser works with Windows, Linux and MacOSX.
In conclusion Opera@USB is a pretty good way of running Opera from your pendrive oh and if you are looking for a more anonymising alternative then try OperaTor. Available for all Windows versions.

10 Advertising Words to Avoid in 2009

The economy, unemployment, companies folding, people losing their homes--2008 has left consumers wary of businesses. And that lack of consumer confidence requires straightforward, honest advertising messages to regain marketplace security. In 2009, perhaps more than ever, the words you use in your copywriting can determine whether you make a sale or lose a customer.
Here are 10 words to avoid in your 2009 copywriting.

1. Free
Ads that include messages about a free product or service promotions can work well during an economic downturn, but consumers need to see the products perform well. E-mail spam filters are tough on messages that include "free" in the subject line. While it might be tempting to use a subject line that says, "Open now to get your free widget," that's an e-mail spam filter red flag that will send your message to most recipients' spam boxes. When the economy is tough, you can't risk having your e-mails not make it to the intended recipients. Replace "free" with "complimentary" or "gratis" to sneak by spam filters without compromising the effectiveness of your message.

2. Guarantee
Few people believe in guarantees these days. Unless you can prove your guarantee is real, use the valuable real estate space in your ad for a more effective message that consumers are likely to believe and act on.

3. Really
If you want to waste space in your ads, include "really" in your copy. This word does nothing to help your messages. Instead, it slows consumers down, and they are not likely to wait around for the complete message. Don't risk losing them by loading your copy with useless filler words. Make sure every word in your copy is there for a reason.

4. Very
Does a message sound more compelling with "very" in it? Is "When you need very fresh flowers, call ABC Florist," more effective than "When you need fresh flowers, call ABC Florist"? If you answered, yes, reread the last paragraph.

5. That
Once you finish writing copy for your ad or marketing piece, reread it and make note of every time you use "that" in your copy. Chances are, you can delete 90 percent of them because "that" is a filler word that doesn't advance the consumer through the message. Instead, it slows down time-strapped consumers. Deliver the messages your audience is likely to respond to, and deliver them quickly.

6. A Lot
Don't use vague copy with words like "a lot" that do nothing to differentiate your business from your competitors. Instead, quantify your messages. If you offer 20 varieties of roses in your flower shop, say so. If you respond to customer service calls within five minutes, tell people. Which is more compelling: "You can choose from a lot of shoe styles at Sally's Shoe Boutique" or "You can choose from more than 100 shoe styles at Sally's Shoe Boutique?" No doubt, "100 shoe styles" is more intriguing than "a lot of shoe styles". A lot can mean different things to different people. Don't leave room for guesswork in your copy. Make your messages extremely clear with no room for confusion.

7. Opportunity
You're not helping anyone when you offer "opportunities" in your copy. Consumers don't want opportunities. They want to feel confident handing over their hard-earned money. They want to know they'll get the results they want and need, not the opportunity to perhaps get those results. Don't let them wonder what they'll get when they pull out their wallets. Tell them.

8. To Be (or Not To Be, For That Matter)
Write your advertising and marketing messages in the active voice, not the passive voice. If any form of "to be," "has been" or anything similar appears in your copy, rewrite it. Writing in the passive voice doesn't command action. Writing in the active voice does.

9. Synergy
This overused piece of jargon has had a long life, but it's time to move on. Leave jargon and 10-dollar words out of your advertising messages. There's no room in copywriting for buzz words and words that consumers need a dictionary to understand. Consumers don't care about your "unique value proposition." They care that when they pay for your product or service, it will deliver the results they expect. Naturally, there are some exceptions to this rule, such as B2B copywriting, where jargon might be expected. In most copywriting, however, keep it simple.

10. Drinkability
Budweiser is already using "drinkability" in its ads. Seriously though, the point is valid--don't copy your competition. Instead, differentiate your product and business with unique copy and messages that your target audience is likely to respond to.

The rules of successful copywriting don't change from one year to the next, but as the marketplace and environment change, so must your messages. Use the list above as a guideline to writing great advertising copy in 2009.

You upload your product listings to shopping sites through data feeds. These provide fields for you to describe your product in detail. It's essential to optimize your data feeds if you want your listing to appear when someone searches for what you offer.

Dynamic Link Libraries, or DLL, were created by Microsoft to run much of the operating system. Some programs contain a lot of different modules and these are all linked together with DLLs, making them run smoothly. When a program is changed-that is, when you download a newer version of one-this means that the entire program doesn't have to be re-coded, just certain modules. Code can be re-used and the programs load more quickly and run faster as well as taking up less space on your hard drive. Other DLL files aren't malicious but cause trouble because the user didn't properly remove a program or application they no longer wanted on their computer. DLLs that are unwittingly left behind when a program isn't removed correctly can interfere with other files and if the DLL is malicious it can recreated itself when you reboot the computer.

How to Re-Calibrate Your Laptop Battery?

It is difficult to predict how long a laptop battery charge will last because each computer user has different habits and needs. The rate at which you use laptop battery power will determine how long you can use the battery of your laptop. You can re-calibrate your laptop battery if the battery's life has gotten shorter over time. Your laptop battery might need a good calibration if it doesn't seem to be getting the mileage that it should. How to re-calibrate laptop battery? The following paragraphs will give you the answer.

First put the laptop computer to sleep by turning off the screensaver and other power management settings of the computer. Then fully charge the computer and allow it to run all the way down until the computer shuts off automatically. Once the laptop battery has fully drained, charge it back up again and restore the screensaver and power management settings.
Re-calibrate your battery every month or so by fully charging, fully discharging, and then fully charging again. Basically to have a chance to re-calibrate your laptop battery is to turn off all power-saving features completely and then fully recharge them. If it doesn't work for the first time then try two more full discharges and recharges.

The above way of re-calibrating the laptop batteries works well with laptops using Ni-MH cells. But not with laptops using Li-Ion batteries because deep discharges will actually decrease the charge capacity and lifespan of Li-Ion cells. Moreover Li-ion batteries irreversibly lose approximately 20% capacity per year from the time of manufacture at a typical 100% charge level at 25deg.C, even when unused. Li-ion batteries irreversibly lose approximately 2%, 4%, 15% at 0deg.C, 25deg.C and 40deg.C respectively, when stored at 40% charge level. That is every deep discharge cycle decreases the capacity of the Li-ion batteries. As the Li-Ion batteries are chemical in nature, charging and recharging is not going to fix the problem once the chemical reactions stop happening. Therefore the best advice for re-calibrating the Li-Ion batteries is to store the battery at 40% charge if it kept unused for any unlimited period of time. Also don't leave the battery in the laptop if you don't use the battery or if you plug the laptop into outlet power.

You can also re-calibrate your laptop battery using IBM Thinkpad Battery Maximizer in order to maximize your laptop battery's life. If your laptop has IBM ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management features installed, you can verify the condition of the laptop battery. You can check the status of your battery using the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge in the taskbar tray. The ThinkPad's Lithium Ion battery pack that seems to be an intelligent battery uses a microprocessor to monitor its capacity. Making YouTube Work for Your Business

Keep it short
YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley says the average viewing time for a clip on the site is 2.5 minutes. That should tell you something. Viewers do not visit YouTube for an hour-long discourse. Newsom's series was broken into 10 segments that lasted approximately 45 minutes apiece. However, his introduction, which lasted less than a minute and a half, garnered 12,000 views in the first week. The longer segments only attracted 100 views during that time period. People simply don't have the time, nor, in most cases, the inclination to watch anyone for more than 10 minutes, even in person. Research shows that people watching a presentation tend to tune out after approximately 10 minutes. Attention spans are even shorter online. Keep your YouTube clips under three minutes. If your presentation is longer, edit the segments, and upload them as shorter clips.

Make it loud and clear
When I worked as a CNN correspondent, my videographers would spend a lot of time setting up audio for interviews. They would tell me viewers will forgive bad video but not bad audio. However, very few video clips on YouTube make use of an external microphone. Most users simply use the built-in microphone on the camera, which results in very poor audio quality, and is sometimes completely unintelligible. Always use an external microphone. You can buy an unobtrusive clip-on microphone from Radio Shack (RSH) or Best Buy (BBY) for $20 to $50. You might even consider spending a little more for a wireless microphone and transmitter. To his credit, Newsom delivered his presentation with a microphone clipped on to his suit lapel. The length may have been too long, but his voice was loud and clear.

Avoid bulleted PowerPoints
What works in person doesn't necessarily work on YouTube. Newsom stood in front of a monitor and advanced traditional PowerPoint slides in the background. Bullet points on slides are hard enough to see in person on a large screen; slides on YouTube are impossible to see. I don't believe in using bullet points anyway, and in this case, the slides were a real distraction. All one could make out were blurry words behind Newsom. The fact is, most presentations do not translate well on YouTube. If you're going to share a presentation that you delivered, use a program to edit your presentation into shorter segments first, insert full-screen slides, and then upload the talk.

YouTube is a great potential resource for your business. It can jump-start your marketing by creating a more personal, direct connection between you and your customers. But try to understand what works and what doesn't before you jump in. People will forgive bad lighting and audio at your daughter's school play, but they expect more from your business.

Google's Android Gains More Powerful Followers

Today is a dark day for Nokia and Microsoft: Telco Vodafone, equipment maker Ericsson and handset maker Sony Ericsson have joined Google’s camp in making rival cell-phone software.

Today, Open Handset Alliance (OHA), a Google-led consortium of companies developing mobile-phone software Android, announced 14 new members, these three huge companies among them. Other impressive additions include AKM Semiconductor Inc., ARM, ASUSTek Computer Inc., Atheros Communications, Borqs, Garmin International Inc., Huawei Technologies, Omron Software Co. Ltd, Softbank Mobile Corporation, Teleca AB and Toshiba Corporation.

What does it all mean? One, that sales of the first Android-based phone, the T-Mobile G1, must be going very well. Only available for sale since this fall, the iPhone-like device made by long-time OHA member HTC is expected to sell around 500,000 units this year. Now, handset makers like new member Ericsson, which plans to release its Android device in mid-2009, want in on the action — particularly since the cost of Android-based handsets is lower than that of phones made with operating systems from Nokia and Microsoft, according to researcher NPD Group. Motorola recently announced it’s going to focus on Android come next year as well.

Second, and most important, carriers and handset makers who’ve just joined the Alliance are, in effect, expressing their dissatisfaction with Android’s long-established rivals, Nokia’s Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software. And no wonder. Symbian is going through a major restructuring, and it’s unclear exactly what it will look like come next year. Microsoft has been losing developer interest, sources tell me.

The bottom line: Until today, Android’s future looked uncertain. Only a minor handset maker, HTC, was making Android-based phones. T-Mobile was the only carrier globally to offer G1, and only in a few markets, including the U.S. Motorola’s support helped but not that much, as the company is in a fragile financial state, and its own future is unclear. That’s why today’s announcement is so important. Vodafone’s support is huge. The carrier has 280 million customers worldwide. Sony Ericsson’s involvement is important as well (larger handset makers like LG are already part of the Alliance). Clearly, big guns are joining this game, and lining up their pawns on Google’s side.

A side note: I find it interesting to see Austek and Toshiba in the new members list. It’s long been expected that Android will be used not only in phones but also in netbooks, which are tiny laptops with screens of less than 10.2 inches. Austek is the largest player in the netbooks category, and today’s announcement could indicate that Android-based netbooks may be coming out, and soon.

Sony Launches PlayStation Home

After pushing back the launch date by more than a year, Sony's (SNE) video game division plans to release PlayStation Home, an online 3-D social networking service, on Dec. 11. Like Linden Labs' Second Life, Home will let users interact with others through their own computer-generated characters in a virtual setting.

Sony is counting on Home to improve the fortunes of its struggling video games unit. Home's launch comes two days after Sony announced 16,000 layoffs and other moves to cut spending as the global recession hurts demand for consumer electronics. The unit, which is in charge of the PlayStation 3 business, has been a huge drag on earnings, losing roughly $3.8 billion over the past two years. Credit Suisse (CS) has predicted that Sony's gaming unit could eke out a profit this year, but that's less than certain in the face of a long recession and an unfavorably strong Japanese yen.

Sony officials say they don't expect an immediate payoff from Home. Their plan is to offer it as a free software download to all PS3 users and to charge gaming companies and other brands to create shops, sell goods, host events, and advertise. "We think that Home will increase the opportunities for gamers to find each other," says Ryoji Akagawa, Home senior producer. "That, in turn, will increase the total number of people playing games, which is a key mission for us."

Behind the Competition
Home marks the latest phase of a rollout of online services for the PlayStation 3. Recently, Sony added video downloads to the PlayStation Network, an online smorgasbord of stuff—including games, music, movies, TV shows, and trailers—which, according to Sony, has attracted 15 million subscribers worldwide. But rival Microsoft (MSFT) still has the lead in offering a full range of online gaming and video-download services, and Nintendo (7974.T) is ahead in game console sales. In October market researcher NPD said Sony sold just 190,000 PS3s in the U.S., compared with 803,210 Nintendo Wii consoles and 371,000 Microsoft Xbox machines. (Since the PS3's release in November 2006, Sony has sold more than 16.8 million units globally. Nintendo launched its Wii that same month but has sold 34.5 million units.)

It's unclear what impact the delays will have on Home. The original plan was to have Home ready by autumn 2007. Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai announced the first delay in October 2007. The company had expected Home to be ready by April of this year, but instead announced another delay. In late August, the company started inviting a limited number of users worldwide to try out a working version of the service known as a "closed beta."

Sony asked for feedback to fine-tune the service before making it available to a broader audience. Among the things programmers learned: Japanese users complained that the virtual characters, or avatars, looked too Western. Home's programmers also changed the appearance of options menus and added voice-chat features. And they built in security measures so parents could prevent their children from visiting certain areas and gamers could report cyberstalkers.

No Global Interaction for U.S. Users
The beauty of Home is that it's constantly evolving. Sony officials are already considering new features that will make Home more similar to social networks like Facebook and MySpace (NWS). In time, Home users will be able to post links to outside Web sites or upload photos for others to see. Want your avatar to eat or drink? That's not possible now but it might get programmed in later, says Sony's Akagawa. With so many features, though, could Home distract gamers from playing games? "We don't really worry about that," says Shoda.

Windows Mobile : What Microsoft Needs to Fix

In September, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer spent a week traipsing across Europe and parts of the U.S. schmoozing 17 of the world's largest handset makers and wireless carriers. It was Ballmer's longest trip ever aimed at drumming up support for Windows Mobile, the company's software for cell phones. The trip may not have been long enough.
In recent months, Microsoft's (MSFT) mobile strategy has hit a rough patch. In the third quarter, iPhone maker Apple (AAPL) shipped more smartphones than all 56 device makers that make Windows Mobile phones combined, according to research firm Canalys. As a result, Windows Mobile slid from its position as the world's second-most popular mobile operating system a year ago to the No. 4 spot, behind Nokia's (NOK) Symbian, Apple's OS X, and Research In Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry.

Partners Warm to Rivals
The threats don't end there. While Windows Mobile shipments continue to grow, its share could slip if, as expected, Apple begins to sell its iPhone through Wal-Mart (WMT), the world's largest retailer. And T-Mobile G1, a phone based on Android, an operating system backed by Google (GOOG), has met with popular demand. Windows Mobile's share may drop to 11% this year from 12% in 2007, says Chris Ambrosio, an executive director for wireless at research firm Strategy Analytics. "On the important issues, they are chasing the market," Ambrosio says. "And they've got to chase much faster" to ensure continued carrier and handset makers' support, he adds.

That backing is far from assured. Speaking at a conference for Symbian partners and developers on Dec. 4, AT&T (T) executive Roger Smith hinted that his company, which offers seven Windows Mobile devices, would prefer to support one type of mobile software. The remarks were widely interpreted to mean AT&T, the No. 1 U.S. wireless service provider, would eventually focus solely on Symbian. Still, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel more recently said, "Microsoft continues to be an important partner for us."

Whatever approach AT&T takes, other Microsoft Microsoft partners are clearly warming to rival software providers. And in a climate where manufacturers and carriers want to narrow the list of their suppliers to reduce costs, Microsoft may not always win out. On Dec. 9, the Android movement added 14 new converts, including British carrier Vodafone (VOD) and handset maker Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, which released its first Windows Mobile-based phone, the Xperia X1, earlier this year. Cell-phone manufacturer HTC, partly owned by Microsoft, made its first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, earlier this year.

Some longtime Windows Mobile developers are switching allegiance. Koushik Dutta, who works for a stealth startup funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, now spends as much time on Android as on Windows Mobile projects. "It will be soon mostly Android," says Koushik, who previously worked exclusively on Windows Mobile software. "I like the [Android] phone better. It's mostly a usability issue." He says Windows Mobile phones tend to lose juice fast when running graphics-intensive applications, though that's a concern voiced by some people about the G1 as well. Plus, Windows Mobile is designed for use with stylus vs. a touch interface, which is now all the rage among consumers.

But all is not lost for Microsoft. To keep partners and developers on board, analysts say Microsoft needs to adapt Windows Mobile software for use with touch interface. However, a major update may not hit the market until 2010.

Microsoft also should also follow Google's and Apple's lead in the area of wireless cloud-computing services. The move would shift energy-sapping computing power away from users' cell phones and onto the powerful servers maintained by Microsoft. Rivals are already offering such services. When you purchase an iPhone application from the Apple App Store, the payment is processed on Apple's servers rather than on an individual device. When you ask your G1 to find the nearest sushi joint, it's Google's servers and not your phone that churn out the map. In both cases, your phone doesn't do much legwork. Most of the processing is done on remote servers "in a cloud." So processing typically happens faster and it requires your handheld device to be less sophisticated—and less costly. As cloud computing spreads onto rival software-based devices, Microsoft could lose $850 million in revenue in 2012 alone, according to Bernstein Research—unless it ramps up its own efforts

Review:

I'm kinda torn about 8start Launcher on one hand is a pretty awesome application launcher but on the other i experienced several little annoyances that turned me off. But let's get to the bad parts later. 8start Launcher works by using three concepts: buttons, groups and categories. Buttons are like shortcuts from everything to apps, files,URLs and folders. Groups are a bunch of buttons placed together. Finally categories are like tabs and can contain several groups. With these concepts you can create many types of layouts and along with the icon customization options available make 8start Launcher a very versatile tool in the looks department. Besides launching stuff you can make some notes but i found the interface for that rather clumsy so i didn't use it that much. Also 8start is portable so you can run it from your pendrive.
Now for the bad part there were a couple of things about 8start Launcher that i didn't like. For starters it takes between 10 to 15 minutes to understand how 8start works. I specifically refer to how to place apps, files and folder into 8start. It was very frustating at first but i got the hang of it eventually. Also 8start Launcher has a problem when being called with the mouse. If you have 8start opened in the desktop and put a Window on top of it you can't call it with the mouse, actually you can call it it's just that 8start will appear on the back of the window instead of the front. The only way to "fix" this is first hide 8start with the hide button and then call it again but that only works one time and then you are back where you started, thankfully the hot-key support works just fine.
If you can get pass the annoyances that i just listed then give 8start Launcher a chance, i found it to be an interesting program but it needs some work in my opinion. Available for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista.

Firefox and Internet Explorer both offer to save passwords for your favorite sites, but neither offer a comprehensive way to manage those passwords, nor a method to easily change the saved data. In addition, neither browser pre-fills your registration and checkout forms.

Password Profiler 2 is a complete rewrite of our automated password filler. This new version allows you to:
• Log into Web sites automatically
• Fill long registration and checkout forms quickly and easily
• Save logins to your favorite sites
• Share logins between IE and Firefox
• Maintain multiple profiles allowing you to fill forms based on your needs, like whether you want to use personal or business information

Password Profiler 2 features:
• An advanced artificial intelligence to properly fill forms
• Encryption to protect your passwords and data (if you choose)
• Non-intrusive password saving and filling (if you choose)
• Low resource use
• Support for IE 6, IE 7, and Firefox

Installing Password Profiler 2
When you install Password Profiler 2 (PP2), it will ask if you'd like to install the Firefox and IE add-ons. If you use both browsers make sure to select both. After the initial install, a wizard will appear to walk you through information about PP2. At the end of the wizard, it will let you choose if you'd like PP2 to automatically save forms with passwords and if you'd like to automatically fill forms that have been previously saved. Whatever you decide to choose now, you can always change your preferences from the Edit | Options menu in the program.

If you install the Firefox extension, Firefox will launch and ask if you would like to install the PasswordProfilerFF.xpi. Select Install Now and the Firefox Add-ons manager will appear with a button prompting you to Restart Now. Once you push the button, Firefox will be restarted and you will see the Password Profiler program icon in the bottom right corner of the browser. Clicking (left click) on the icon will display the Password Profiler popup menu.


If you install the IE add-on, the Password Profiler icon will appear in the toolbar of IE 6 when you restart it. In IE 7, Password Profiler will appear in the chevron ">>" menu in the toolbar.

Form Filling
Now that the program is installed, you can configure PP2 to fill in Web site registration, banking, and checkout forms. From within IE, click on the PP2 toolbar button; in Firefox, click on the PP2 icon in the status bar. A menu will appear providing five options:
• Fill form using profile… – this is used to fill a registration, bank, or checkout form with saved profile data you create
• Fill form using saved… – this is used to fill a login form with data saved from the last time you logged in to the site and saved the data
• Save form – this saves the login information and other data that you've enter into the form on the current Web page
• Launch Password Profiler – this opens the PP2 program window
• Lock Database – this locks the PP2 database preventing unauthorized access

Select Launch Password Profiler and the main window will appear. On the left side (labeled 1 in the picture below) is a tree showing a folder that contains a default profile called "Internet." This profile contains several items related to the profile. These items are:

• User – this item contains information about you or the alternate user you want to create. Fields include first and last name, date of birth, birth place, and gender
• Address – this item lets you enter the address, city, state, ZIP, and country for the profile
• Contact – this item contains all your phone numbers, e-mail address, and associated Web sites
• Credit Card – this item lets you enter card information like type, number, CVS, name on card, and expiration date
• Banking – this item enables you to enter information about your checking accounts
• Login – this item lets you enter the username and password that you commonly use when you register at a new site











You can create additional data items in each profile. For example, if you occasionally register at sites with your work address, you can create a new address item by clicking on the current Address item and selecting the New Address button that appears at the top of the profile tree. You could also right click on the profile or any of the data items and select Insert Address. You can then enter the information about the item (see 2 in the picture above). Each data item can be renamed for easy identification. For example, you might have a Home address and a Work address. You can also select which data item should be set as default by right clicking on the name and selecting the Set as default menu option. Default items are displayed in bold text and are listed first when filling a form.

Now that you've filled in profile data, you can quickly and easily register at sites, enter banking info, or check out quickly from online stores.

When you're done filling in your profile information, close PP2's main window and go to a site that you'd like to register at. Once there, click IE's PP2 toolbar or Firefox's PP2 status bar icon and select Fill form using profile… A dialog will appear allowing you to select a profile to use for filling the form. Select the profile and click OK. If you'd like to use a different set of data from the profile rather than the default data, for example your work address, just make sure to select the appropriate profile data before hitting OK.


Passwords
PP2 offers a lot of flexibility in how to fill and save passwords. In developing this utility, we found that everyone seems to like to have passwords handled differently. Some people like a window to pop up announcing that PP2 has a saved password for the page. Others, like me, prefer to take an action in order to save and retrieve the password.

In the Options dialog there is a tab that contains the settings for auto-saving and auto-filling. If you'd like to have PP2 automatically save forms that contain passwords, select the checkbox next to this option and then select whether you want PP2 to prompt you before saving or not. If you choose to have PP2 prompt you, a dialog box will appear whenever you submit a password to a new site.

Similarly, you can choose to have PP2 automatically fill pages with saved form data. If you select this option, you can also select whether it should do so with a prompt or without.

If you don't want to have PP2 do any auto-form filling or auto-form saving, you can perform these actions in two different ways. To save a form, select the Save Form menu item from PP2's menu or use a hotkey that you've assigned. To fill a form, you simply select the menu choice Fill form using saved… which allows you to select a pre-existing saved form, or you can use a hotkey

Password Profiler's Database
PP2 uses a database to store your profiles and logins. Occasionally you may want to perform maintenance on this database. In the File menu are four database-related options:
• Restore Database… – this opens a dialog to select an existing backup to replace the current one
• Backup Database… – this item allows you to select a location to back up the current database
• Database Info… – this lists information about the database, such as how many records are in the database and the last time it was backed up.
• Compact Database… – this allows you to shrink the size of a database that has gotten large over time and has had many records deleted. It is important to not interrupt the compaction process once started or else you risk corrupting the database

Additional Features

Master Password
If you use PP2 in an office or on a laptop, or perhaps if you're concerned about security at home, you can lock down PP2 so that it requires a password to use. From the Edit menu, select Edit Master Password… This opens a dialog that allows you to create a master password. It asks for the password, a confirmation of the password, and a reminder phrase to help you remember the password.

PP2 does not store your password anywhere on your system, or even in the program's memory, so it is imperative that you do not forget it. Lost passwords cannot be recovered. Because the password is not retained, you will need to enter the password whenever you launch the PP2 Editor, or a new browser session.

Reporting/Printing
You can print out all of your profiles and saved site forms. You can also create an HTML file to view them outside of the program. Simply hit the Print button in the toolbar and select if you'd like to include profiles and/or sites and if you'd like to hide passwords. Then hit the Print or Print to file button.











Window Style
PP2 also features a method to change the look of the program. From the View menu, select Application Look. The default look is Office 2007 Blue Style. However, you can select an appearance from eight other styles like Window 2000, Windows XP, Office 2003, and more.

Release Notes
PP2 is a complete rewrite of the original Password Profiler (PP). As such, it was not possible to extract the dataset from the original PP and import it into PP2. If you previously used PP, you will need to recreate your logins.

In order to provide more flexibility in matching passwords with sites, URLs stored in the database are not encrypted. This may be a concern to some people who choose to use a master password to lock down PP2. Please note that this does not affect stored passwords. They are still encrypted.

Password Profiler 2 does not support Authentication Dialogs. These are Windows dialog boxes that are displayed by your browser to prompt for user credentials. Password Profiler 2 only supports Web Forms at the current time.

PP2 has not been thoroughly tested with the beta version of IE 8. PP2 will probably need to be updated to function with IE 8 when IE 8 is officially released.
